Tarlair Lido: A Triumph of Community Spirit and Heritage Revival

In the heart of Aberdeenshire’s rugged coastline lies a testament to community resilience and the enduring allure of Art Deco design: Tarlair Lido. Once a bustling hub of seaside leisure, this historic site has recently undergone a remarkable transformation, breathing new life into a cherished landmark.
A Glimpse into the Past
Commissioned in 1929 by Macduff Town Council and unveiled in 1931, Tarlair Lido was the brainchild of architect John C. Miller. Nestled against dramatic sea cliffs, the complex featured a paddling pool, boating lake, and a sea-fed swimming pool, all centred around a striking mint-and-cream pavilion. For decades, it served as a vibrant gathering place, hosting gala days, swimming competitions, and even concerts by renowned bands like Jethro Tull and Runrig.
Decline and Determination
The lido’s fortunes waned in the 1990s, leading to its closure in 1996. However, the story didn’t end there. In 2013, a group of dedicated volunteers formed the Friends of Tarlair, embarking on a mission to restore the site to its former glory. Overcoming numerous challenges, including funding hurdles and structural decay, their unwavering commitment culminated in the pavilion’s grand reopening in March 2025. This milestone, achieved after a decade-long campaign and approximately £2 million in funding, stands as a beacon of community-driven preservation.
A New Chapter Begins
Today, visitors to Tarlair Lido can once again experience the charm of its restored pavilion, complete with a café and rooftop terrace offering panoramic views of the Moray Firth. While the pools themselves await further restoration, the site’s revival has already rekindled local pride and attracted a new generation of admirers. The Friends of Tarlair continue to spearhead efforts to fully restore the swimming facilities, ensuring that this coastal gem remains a vibrant part of Aberdeenshire’s heritage.
