I have been here many times, mostly when younger, and this is my Family, Clan Castle. The Urquhart family goes way back into ancient Clan times and the Urquhart Clan always looked at this place, since 1607, as a place of the family since John Urquhart built it starting in 1604. I started staying here, a few years ago and this year, October 2023, brought 5 couples with me for a stay. The grounds are always wonderful and William has created a wonderful place for people to stay! Elisabetta is a terrific Host and Manager and the Family is very fortunate to have her. The location to all of the favorite places along the coast are close. Banff, Nairn, Gardenstown, Fraserburgh and Aberdeen are all very close. Turriff is a very lovely town and just a few miles away. Great Distilleries are nearby also, including my favorite, Glendronach. I highly recommend as a classic Castle stay for your next adventure in Aberdeenshire!!

We had a magical week in the castle and have really appreciated you being at hand to help us and answer any questions we had. We all loved the tour you so kindly gave us your time to do.
It was so interesting living the history of the building and the family.
We all had a bit of sadness last time having to leave the castle but so delighted that we had the opportunity to experience living in it. It has such a homely and happy atmosphere. I do hope we have looked after it properly.
I would forever cherish being a “Queen” for a week!

Our family wanted to be able to stay in this castle and explore the area around it. The house afforded us someplace where we could all stay comfortably, and a base from which to do day trips. I especially enjoyed the lovely fresh flowers in the house that came from the gardens; and of course, the flowers around the castle and grounds. I must give credit to Elisabetta who greeted us so warmly and made us feel at home, and then was on hand again to say goodbye at the end of our stay.
Rooms: Beautifully, yet comfortably, furnished. It took only a short time to feel at home.
Nearby activities: We loved Bullers of Buchan both for the variety of birds to be seen and the wonderful scenery. We also drove to Culloden Battlefield for a really informative tour.

My California family children and grandchildren all loved this beautiful castle. Stairs to climb woods to ramble in, stories and pictures of Urquhart families through the centuries. We went hawking and tasted whiskies. Despite the castle being 500 years old, it was comfortable and warm and the welcome was memorable. Great holiday.

My wife, Katie, myself, our son, daughter in law and four grandchildren, plus three friends spent five days at the castle recently. We had a great time. The kids played soccer and rugby in the huge front lawn. We did the 3.3 mile hike of the perimeter, which was beautiful. We had a chef come in for two dinners, which were great. Finally, the hospitality was very warm and helpful. Overall, a wonderful experience.

From the time we arrived, Craigston Castle felt like our Scottish home. Elisabetta was a great help and the staff were terrific. We came for our daughter’s wedding at Fyvie Castle and decided to have a family reunion too. I loved the castle and also the surrounding land. It was a true fairytale. We hope to return one day!!!

Our stay at Craigston Castle – will be etched on all of our minds for the rest of our lives 🙂 From the moment Elisabetta welcomed us, to the moment we hugged her goodbye … the entire stay was like being in a dream. It warmed our hearts when Elisabetta said, not long after we first met, “this is now your home now” … Our home? A castle? That was mind blowing … We had 10 guests who all flew in from California to celebrate a marquee birthday and also to gather, rest, relax, and explore some new experiences. The 10 of us took up 5 rooms. All of the rooms were beautifully furnished, which we later found out to be authentic and antique … much of the furniture was built at the castle, in the actual rooms (as it would have been impossible to make off-site and bring up the spiral staircase). All of the photos in the rooms of family members were also of the Urquhart family and their friends and the paintings are all catalogued. We had invited a private Chef, Roma (who Elisabetta had recommended) to help with meals (Breakfasts, Lunch, Snacks and Dinner), which made all the difference. We also booked some activities on the castle grounds, which we could have done off-site, but “hey, we’re staying at a Castle” … so why not?! Activities included, Clay Pigeon Shooting, Whiskey Tasting, Archery and Falconry. All of them we coordinated/contracted with directly, but all were recommendations from Elisabetta. Each expert that came onsite, was super nice, knowledgeable and stayed as long as we wanted. Elisabetta, who lives on premise in her own separate/private wing of the castle, also agreed to give our group a tour. It was then, that the majesty and history of the castle came alive and there were many moments afterwards that we would imagine what it would have been like for the owners/families and staff moving around the castle and grounds. We would gather throughout the morning at the breakfast table and also outside in the mornings. We had dinner in both of the large dining rooms, and gathered in the evenings in the drawing room, playing charades, laughing and telling stories. This is truly a magical place. Well worth the drive up from Aberdeen (closest airport) and only 10mins to Turriff (the closest town) and 20mins to the coast. We will recommend Craigston Castle to all our friends and look forward to returning one day soon. Thank you.

Craigston Castle is truly a magical place! From the moment you walk in the door, you are greeted by magnificent history and the warmth and beautiful surroundings of the present. We stayed three nights for a family celebration, and both grown-ups and kids loved every moment of exploring the castle and its grounds. Elisabetta welcomed us to Craigston in the best way possible, and was the perfect host both before and during our stay. We did a private whisky tasting with food-pairing at the castle, which I highly recommend! Elisabetta provided us with everything we needed from the herb and vegetable garden for cooking, and chef Grant prepared a wonderful birthday dinner to top off our stay. We are grateful that William and his family let us experience staying in their extraordinary home, a true highlight of our Scottish vacation!

Craigston Castle is a really wonderful place. I have just spent an amazing week full of relax, peace and nature inside and outside the Castle. The surroundings are full of beautiful places where to go and enjoy landscapes and nature….but also historical buildings. Very interesting the Castle with historical furniture and a marvellous Library. Betta , the host, is simply fantastic!!! Very nice and welcoming ….really the top!!!!

E’ sempre meraviglioso tornare al castello!!! Questa volta ho alloggiato nella holly room, molto bella e comoda col suo bagno in camera e una splendida luce al mattino. Elisabetta riesce sempre a farti sentire a casa ma ho avuto anche la fortuna di condividere questi giorni in Scozia anche col proprietario del Craigstone Castle, William, amabilissimo e molto alla mano che ha arricchito la mia permanenza con racconti e aneddoti della sua famiglia, proprietaria da sempre del castello. Molto belli anche i dintorni, con i campi di colza in fiore, uno spettacolo!

This was my second time visiting this lovely castle and it’s surroundings. There’s lots to see and do, both at the castle and in it’s proximity. This time around my group and I focused on visiting several golf courses and the local pubs which was allot of fun. All the locals are really friendly and has alot of storys to tell. With the lovely host Elisabetta the castle feels like you’re home for a weekend, she takes good care of you and you’re group and has alot of stories about the castle and the history of it. I can highly recommend booking the chef Nelson for your stay as well, as he cooks the most wonderful meals. Looking forward to our next visit!

I’ve been to Craigston Castle three times in the last 4 years, last time February 2022. It has always been an exciting experience, both for the warm and welcoming atmosphere that never disappoints, and for the wonderful natural rich environment of fauna and flora. It is a castle full of history, you can perceive it in every corner, however hidden it may be, but it is above all a home, lived-in and beloved. An experience absolutely to enjoy.

Craigston Castle was an absolute treasure. Our group visit castles for a long weekend every year (with a little gap due to Covid) and out of all the majestic landmarks we’ve visited, this was probably the best one yet.
There are many great points about our stay, so I’ll just start listing them. The grounds are nestled in a great little corner west of Aberdeen, with great woods and agri land all around. When you arrive, the castle stands with great prominence at the end of the driveway, welcoming you like high society. Even before you arrive, you’re greeted by Elisabetta through email and text, welcoming you to your stay and ensuring everything is in place beforehand. Before, on arrival and during your stay, Elisabetta gives a welcoming air to the weekend.You’re not short of space or rooms with Craigston, many lovely bedrooms (even with some under renovation), a cosy and full kitchen area, beautiful main lounge, elegant dining room and an absolutely amazing garden. Even in winter it was nice to sit out in. As the castle is lived in and still owned by the family, it’s always cosy, warm and comfortable (in contrast to some Trust properties are colder and less homely due to being caretaked as opposed to lived in). Everything about the estate and castle is looked after and tended to so you really feel at home when you arrive and stay.
I would definitely recommend Craigston to all for a long weekend or week with the family/large group of close friends, a great getaway. Having the ability to bring two of the groups dogs along really made it too, having great walks on the doorstep and a well equipped/cosy ground floor for them to stay.
Top of our list as a group of castle goers!
From our experience the price is of great value too, for what you get and in contrast to any other castle you could look at for the same time.

We had a fantastic week in Craigston Castle – thank you for sharing this amazing home with us! This castle is truly awe inspiring and although so sumptuously decorated with priceless heirlooms it still feels fantastically cosy and homely. The kitchen is so well stocked, bedrooms gorgeously comfortable and the kids loved exploring all the rooms, especially using the dumb waiter! The grounds are equally lovely, perfect for breakfasts al fresco and croquet on the lawn whilst watching woodpeckers, red squirrels and possibly even pine martens! Elisabetta was so welcoming and full of fascinating knowledge of the castle and also surrounding areas. We were all sad to have to leave and would happily come back!

We had a wonderful week at the castle. We got together to celebrate my daughter’s graduation, which could not happen because of COVID, and we could not have chosen a better place to celebrate.
The whole experience was fabulous and we felt so at home. While the castle is really grand, we very quickly settled ourselves: we rather enjoyed getting a bit lost sometimes as we explored the rooms and found our favourites. The bedrooms are amazing and the beds are so comfortable.
Because we were celebrating, we had lots of meals together, and as chief cook, I really appreciated the great kitchen that was well equipped. The kitchen became the gathering place most evenings and we often ate at the big ‘servants’ table. We also used the dining rooms for formal dinners but we were not brave enough to use the dumb waiter!
The grounds are fabulous and we often wandered around. There are acres of privacy and amazing views of the castle. We held our own garden party on the front lawn and breakfasted most mornings in the rear garden, which was beautifully framed with rhododendrons.
Elisabetta met us on arrival and oriented us. She was super helpful and made us really welcome, then disappeared until we needed her. It could not have been a better arrangement and nothing was too much trouble. The trip to the library, which houses priceless family history and archives was a highlight for some of us and it was a delight to get access to this – pretty much the only area of the house that is not fully accessible when staying there.
Overall we had a wonderful time and could not recommend it highly enough – and we really hope to be able to visit again.

I organised a driving holiday round Scotland for my Father’s 75th Birthday. To round off our trip I organised a nights stay in Craigston Castle. From the first contact with Elisabetta the property manager I was made to feel welcome and none of my many requests were too difficult. Elisabetta helped me organise a stunning Black tie dinner catered by the Fife arms and an archery competition in the grounds of the castle. Rounding off a fine evening with a whiskey in the grand drawing room the whole event was truly special and memorable. The Castle is simply stunning. Makes sure to request a trip to the roof to see the views. It’s obviously ancient but still manages to be warm, homely and comforting. I could not recommend a stay at Craigston more highly.

We chose Craigston Castle for a long weekend with friends. Fantastic experience! We lived as princes and princesses with all the castle available to us. The location is easily accessible and surrounded by greenery. Spacious, comfortable and welcoming rooms, fully equipped kitchen and host always on hand. We stayed at Craigston Castle at the end of August in a small group of six with two children. We had an excellent time and we only regret not having enough time to visit and do all the different activities in the surrounding area. Elisabetta was very efficient to organize a day at the farm while we were busy playing Golf in the magnificent course near the castle. We really enjoyed that time and we will be back soon.

This summer we stayed for 5 nights at Craigston Castle with friends. It is a magical historical place with authentic interiors, beautiful bedrooms and bathrooms. The castle is situated in a very scenic and peaceful part of Scotland and ideal for friends or family reunions. The location is perfect for short excursions and hikes in the surroundings including Whiskey distilleries.
Elisabetta and William are incredibly welcoming and helpful hosts who took excellent care and made us immediately feel at home. The children particularly enjoyed playing hide and seek in the enchanted rooms and playing soccer on the big lawn in front of the castle.
Our teenage children and us did not want to leave and hope to come back next year.

In July I travelled to Aberdeenshire to rediscover my Scottish roots … I had not set foot in the Craigston Castle since I was a young boy, some 60 years ago. … Throughout our tour Elisabetta provided us with a detailed commentary on the various objects we viewed and answered our many questions … Elisabetta’s love, energy and enthusiasm for Craigston was apparent from the moment we met her and throughout our visit. … This is truly a cut above many other holiday properties, and I am looking forward to booking it in the near future for a family reunion … William and his team at Craigston have done a remarkable job in maintaining the fabric of the castle, both externally and internally and congratulations are in order. Outstanding holiday castle rental with exceptional service from Elisabetta at Craigston Castle who went out of her way to ensure we were well looked after. When we mentioned that several people in our group played the piano she even went so far as to ensure the lovely grand piano in the drawing room was tuned just before we arrived, especially for our visit. Staying at the castle with its rich heritage and history was a rare privilege for us and worth every penny. We couldn’t have wished for a more memorable and inspiring holiday.

We hired Craigston Castle for a long weekend with a group of seven ladies and had an absolutely wonderful time from start to finish. Everything was just perfect. From Betta’s warm and attentive hospitality, to the incredible rooms and very comfortable bathrooms, to the fully equipped kitchen, to the endless activities that we spent our days exploring. We tasted whiskies, visited a great nearby distillery, lounged about in front of the fire and had lots of delicious dinners. I couldn’t recommend Craigston more, we’re already planning to go back again soon! I love Craigston Castle! A unique place, very fascinating and with a warm atmosphere. Beautiful furniture design, very gentle welcome, friendly family management that makes you feel at home. The castle is within a wonderful territory, wild and with a lot of nice animals: deer, sheep and cows. The surroundings are very nice, with many villages by the sea and other castles to visit. I suggest you make your next relaxing vacation there!

We selected Craigston Castle to celebrate our 50th Anniversary with our children and grandchildren. I cannot imagine a better selection. From the moment we saw the castle, through the trees, on our arrival we knew our stay would be memorable. Barbara and Betta met us at the front door and grave us the grand tour and history of the castle. Their responsiveness to our needs and requests was amazing and enhanced our stay. Whether playing hide and seek in the castle or exploring the trails and meadows in the surrounding forrest there was no need for electronic entertainment, much to our grandchildren’s surprise. The castle is perfectly located for exploring the Northeastern Highlands and coast. However, we opted to spend most of our time at the Craigston Castle. Truly , a once in a lifetime experience

Visiting Craigston Castle with a party of 10 colleagues from Sweden, we enjoyed the lovely atmosphere and wonderful hospitality of our hosts. We stayed at the castle for a week in total, some for the total stay and others for just parts of the week. The generous amount of flexibility and hospitality was out of this world! Nothing was impossible, and our hosts were always there for us whenever we needed anything or had any questions what so ever! The grounds were lush and perfect for jogging. It was wonderfully peaceful and quiet, with one of us spotting no less than 30 different breeds of birds during a morning stroll. The Castle was tidy and clean, the facilities were in perfect order, the kitchen was impeccably maintained and fully functioning. In short: Everything we needed was within reach! We warmly recommend anyone considering a getaway to the Highlands or planning a conference for the office team to choose Craigstone, as it is idyllic, both from location and facility point of view! In August my husband and I came to Scotland to explore my family “roots.” The indisputable highlight of our trip, however, was being able to visit the ancestral home of the Urquhart clan, Craigston Castle. We cannot thank William, Barbara and Elisabetta enough for making this dream possible, not just for me, but for my late father and grandfather who always wanted to come to Scotland to see our family home but were never able to do so. The visit was everything we could have ever dreamed of and more. Words cannot adequately express the magnificence and sense of overwhelming history of the castle. Craigston Castle is truly a special and unique place where so many important historical artifacts (furnishings, rare antique carpets, paintings, photos, and other objects de art) are so wonderfully preserved and beautifully displayed. Elisabetta graciously gave us a magnificent tour of the castle, describing the various rooms and significant features in astounding detail. The time flew by so quickly, and we learned so much about the Urquhart family–my ancestors–under her guidance. She is truly an amazing and delightful lady who lends such an air of gracious elegance to an already magnificent castle. Craigston Castle is truly like stepping through a magic mirror to get a glimpse of a grander and more elegant time, with subtle reminders of the fiery Highland warrior spirit that embodied the Urquhart history as well. We fell in love with everything about Craigston Castle and dearly hope to be able to come to Scotland again to spend more time at this spectacular place.

August at Craigston Castle was amazing. We stayed for a week and soaked in the Scottish hospitality and warmth. The castle was well equipped for our large 12 person group, and we fitted in just perfectly. We had such a grand time playing games and singing around the piano at night and traveling the countryside during the day. The historic decor and feel of the place was like stepping into an episode of Outlander. Amazing art, carved doorways, stone windy stairs going up up up… my friends and I could not have asked for more. Great getaway from the burdens of life. Truly a magical place. We had an amazing stay at Craigston Castle! It’s exactly what you would expect from staying in a castle – beautiful, historical and spacious – without any sense of pretence or unease. I love Craigston Castle! A unique place, very fascinating and with a warm atmosphere. Beautiful furniture design, very gentle welcome, friendly family management that makes you feel at home. The castle is within a wonderful territory, wild and with a lot of nice animals: deer, sheep and cows. The surroundings are very nice, with many villages by the sea and other castles to visit. I suggest you make your next relaxing vacation there!

We just finished a 4 night stay at Craigston Castle near Turriff in Scotland and couldn’t have had a better time … Amazing estate, winding staircases, secret rooms, ghost stories, grand rooms, turrets, everything you could imagine when staying in a castle. Adding to the magic of the castle is the graciousness of the owner, host and Laird, William. He could not have been more welcoming, humble or informative. He showed us the secret passageways, secret library and wine cellar and told us all of the castle stories/secrets. Anyone who has ever thought “it would be cool to stay in a castle” should look no further than Craigston Castle. A magical time that we will hopefully be able to do again some day in the future.

We had a fantastic summer holiday at Craigston – three rough and tumble families playing together in this incredible home. Monster games of hide and seek in 17th century closet and passageways. Full contact soccer on the front lawn. A treasure hunt and morning jogs in the forests and trails of the grounds. Lively meals round the enormous tables. Coffee and port by the fire in the drawing room with the kids asleep in the towers upstairs. Claus and Barbara were terrific hosts, gracious and friendly, with tips spot on for beaches, wildlife, golfing, and distilleries. A uniquely wonderful place.

Stayed at the Lodge in November ‘22 with our eighteen month old retriever puppy. The lodge is perfect for dogs as it has totally enclosed garden. Open a gate from garden and you are safe woodlands. There are great walks within the castle grounds and dogs are welcome everywhere. The Lodge is super comfortable and was perfect for our needs. Couple of minor issues which were immediately addressed. Guided tour of Castle was a highlight. Elisabetta is a great host. We will stay again next time we are in Aberdeenshire.

We had the most wonderful holiday in North Lodge – didn’t want to leave! The Lodge is so cosy and is spotlessly clean and very well equipped. The garden is beautiful and very secure for children or pets and the woodland walks on the doorstep were a huge bonus for walking our dogs. The Lodge is in an ideal location for exploring the North East of Scotland with its many stunning beaches and quaint villages. We can’t thank Elisabetta enough for all her care and assistance. This cottage is the ideal place for exploring the north east coast of Scotland. We had absolutely amazing weather which was a great starter for any holiday. I have just spent an amazing week full of relax, peace and nature inside and outside the Castle.
The surroundings are full of beautiful places where to go and enjoy landscapes and nature….but also historical buildings.
Very interesting the Castle with historical furniture and a marvellous Library.

May 23, 2022 - Craigston Castle was an absolute treasure. Our group visit castles for a long weekend every year (with a little gap due to Covid) and out of all the majestic landmarks we've visited, this was probably the best one yet.
There are many great points about our stay, so I'll just start listing them. The grounds are nestled in a great little corner west of Aberdeen, with great woods and agri land all around. When you arrive, the castle stands with great prominence at the end of the driveway, welcoming you like high society. Even before you arrive, you're greeted by Elisabetta through email and text, welcoming you to your stay and ensuring everything is in place beforehand. Before, on arrival and during your stay, Elisabetta gives a welcoming air to the weekend.
You're not short of space or rooms with Craigston, many lovely bedrooms (even with some under renovation), a cosy and full kitchen area, beautiful main lounge, elegant dining room and an absolutely amazing garden. Even in winter it was nice to sit out in. As the castle is lived in and still owned by the family, it's always cosy, warm and comfortable (in contrast to some Trust properties are colder and less homely due to being caretaked as opposed to lived in). Everything about the estate and castle is looked after and tended to so you really feel at home when you arrive and stay.
I would definitely recommend Craigston to all for a long weekend or week with the family/large group of close friends, a great getaway. Having the ability to bring two of the groups dogs along really made it too, having great walks on the doorstep and a well equipped/cosy ground floor for them to stay.
Top of our list as a group of castle goers!
From our experience the price is of great value too, for what you get and in contrast to any other castle you could look at for the same time.

I have been here many times, mostly when younger, and this is my Family, Clan Castle. The Urquhart family goes way back into ancient Clan times and the Urquhart Clan always looked at this place, since 1607, as a place of the family since John Urquhart built it starting in 1604. I started staying here, a few years ago and this year, October 2023, brought 5 couples with me for a stay. The grounds are always wonderful and William has created a wonderful place for people to stay! Elisabetta is a terrific Host and Manager and the Family is very fortunate to have her. The location to all of the favorite places along the coast are close. Banff, Nairn, Gardenstown, Fraserburgh and Aberdeen are all very close. Turriff is a very lovely town and just a few miles away. Great Distilleries are nearby also, including my favorite, Glendronach. I highly recommend as a classic Castle stay for your next adventure in Aberdeenshire!!

Our family wanted to be able to stay in this castle and explore the area around it. The house afforded us someplace where we could all stay comfortably, and a base from which to do day trips. I especially enjoyed the lovely fresh flowers in the house that came from the gardens; and of course, the flowers around the castle and grounds. I must give credit to Elisabetta who greeted us so warmly and made us feel at home, and then was on hand again to say goodbye at the end of our stay.
